How Do I Get Involved in the Community as a Newcomer Youth?
Being new to Canada—or just settling into a new city—can feel a little overwhelming at first. But one of the best ways to start feeling more at home, meet new people, make friends, and build confidence is by getting involved in your community. Volunteering is a great place to start!
Volunteering isn’t just about giving your time. It’s about discovering your strengths, exploring new interests, and building friendships along the way. It’s also a great way to improve your English in a relaxed and supportive environment.
And here’s something important if you're in high school: Volunteer hours count toward your graduation! In Ontario, students need at least 40 hours of community involvement to graduate. Volunteering can help you earn those hours while doing something meaningful.
Not sure where to begin?
Here are a few great places to start:
🌟 Your School – Ask your teachers, guidance counselor, or student council about clubs or events that need volunteers. Schools often need help with fundraisers, sports events, or welcoming new students.
🌟 Local Organizations – Newcomer centres, food banks, cultural festivals, and youth programs are always looking for helping hands. It’s a great way to give back and learn more about your community.
🌟 Public Library – Libraries are more than just books! They often run youth programs, tutoring sessions, reading clubs, and workshops—and they love having teen volunteers help out.
Volunteering helps you grow, gain experience, and even build your resume for future jobs or post-secondary applications. Plus, it just feels good to help others!
Start getting involved, try something new, and start shaping your future while making your community a better place.
You’ve got this! 💪🌍
